MAx-4 controller obsolescence: what are the options?

MAx-4 controllers are obsolete.

MAx-4 controllers were among the earliest ELAU PacDrive M controllers, but were withdrawn from sale in 2010. Now, sourcing these controllers—as well as the necessary parts for repairs—is becoming increasingly difficult. While many MAx-4 units remain vital to production lines the risk of failure and prolonged downtime is growing. A proactive assessment of these risks is strongly advised. So, what are the options to mitigate against MAx-4 controller obsolescence?

Three Main Options to Consider

Repair When Needed
This option minimises costs by only spending on repairs as required. However, as spare parts become scarcer, the risk of extended downtime increases.

Keep Spare MAx-4 Controllers On-Site
Having spare controllers, as well as motors and drives, readily available reduces downtime when replacements are needed. Periodic testing is recommended to ensure functionality when the time comes. This testing can be included as part of a service contract.

Upgrade to a C200, C400 or C600 Controller
These controllers remain readily available providing a short to medium term solution to MAx-4 obsolescence concerns. A feasibility study would need to be conducted to ensure compatibility, but such an upgrade can be a viable interim step before fully transitioning to PacDrive 3. Why Proactive Planning Matters

As replacement MAx-4 controllers and spare parts become harder to source, assessing available options becomes more important. Your decision will depend on risk appetite, budget, and timelines—but the greatest risk is taking no action at all. Waiting for a breakdown could result in an inability to repair or replace the controller creating costly disruptions. Given that the average cost of downtime is nearly £6,000 per hour, exploring your options now can help mitigate future risks.
