End of PacDrive M Service and Repair Period

PacDrive M obsolescence

Background

Schneider Electric recently sent a reminder about the “End of PacDrive M Service and Repair Period” which is effective from 31st December 2024. PacDrive M products were sold until December 2018 and some spare parts remained available until last year. However, Schneider Electric no longer have any PacDrive M products available and repairs are only warranted until the end of this year. This is also dependent upon the availability of components.

Developed and launched by ELAU in 1998, PacDrive M is still used on over 80,00 production lines around the world. With the End of Service and Repair Period communication, the obvious question is “what does it mean for me”?

What options do I have?

There are risks surrounding PacDrive M. However, these are not new to ourselves as we have been helping clients navigate PacDrive M obsolescence since December 2018. We believe there are three fundamental strategies to minimise the risk.

  1. If you are not experiencing any issues with your current PacDrive M equipment, with proper planning it may be possible to continue using it for many more years. This would require ensuring issues such as Breakdown support and Training are covered. Additionally, it would be prudent to utilise condition monitoring with our Machine Analyser® which can monitor asset health 24/7. We offer Service Contracts which include these and more.
  2. Secondly, a partial upgrade to PacDrive may be possible. This would be dependent on a number of factors – one being software compatibility – but would add an additional level of security. However, this may not necessarily be as straightforward as it may seem. Machinery and equipment evolves over time and compatibility issues could exist
  3. Lastly, a full migration to the current PacDrive 3 range. Whilst this would eliminate any obsolescence worries, factors such as cost, timings and the downtime needed have to be considered.

How do I know what is the right one for my site?

This will undoubtedly vary from company to company and will be based on a number of factors. These include budget, risk appetite and timelines. However, before any decision can be made it is vital to know your PacDrive M risk exposure.

To understand this we would recommend a Site Risk Assessment. Such an audit allows us assess the condition of all PacDrive M equipment – and PacDrive 3 if this is also being used. We can then provide and in-depth report with all the relevant facts and information. Based on this, a decision on the best course of action can then be made.

Summary

With the End of Service and Repair Period for PacDrive M, without doubt the biggest risk is doing nothing. Understanding your exposure is the first step and once established a plan can be formulated. Minimising downtime is key in whatever decision is finally taken and planned is always better than unplanned – especially when solutions exist which can fit all budgets.
